IT Tips – March 2015

Phew, it’s getting hot up here. It was 30 degrees today!

Do the Bump!

I know what you’re thinking. Your inner monologue immediately exclaimed, “What does the IT guy know about dancing? I don’t need this geek to show me how to move!”

Well, guess what? Your PC has some fancy moves too. Who else but a geek is going to show you how to make your PC move it (move it)?

How can this possibly have anything to do with my computer?
Trust me. It does (sort of…)
Imagine for a moment that you’re sitting at your desk. The gentle glow of the monitor on your face belies the fervor in your mind as you churn through loads of work. You reach for your Nespresso and drink the warm, energy-giving liquid. The fluid is smooth and invigorating as it slips down your throat. In that caffeine fueled moment you think to yourself, “I WISH I COULD LOOK AT CRM AND THIS SPEADSHEET AT THE SAME TIME!”

First, take it down a notch and to ease off the caffeine. Second, that is totally possible and I’m here to show you some of your PC’s smooth moves.

It’s easy to view things side-by-side on your PC!
You just need to learn how to do the bump! The bump is a very neat Windows feature that allows you to “bump” a program window to change its size. You literally drag the window and bump it to the top, left or right side of the screen to make it dance.
The bump can perform three time-saving maneuvers:
·         Bump the top of the screen to maximize the window.
·         Bump the left side of the screen to resize the window to the left half of the screen.
·         Bump the right side of the screen to resize the window to the right half of the screen.
This can be extremely useful when trying to view two things at once. You can bump one window to the left side and the other to the right. Bumping windows side-by-side is an excellent use of screen real estate.
Watch the clip below to see how the bump works!
You now know how to bump to the left and to the right. The final maneuver is to boogy-woogy bump it to the top.
Bumping a window to the top of the screen is a neat shortcut for maximizing. I find this to be easier and more natural that clicking the little maximize button.
Here’s how:

What if I can’t finesse my mouse like you?
Don’t worry. I may be good at bumping computer windows, but my dance moves are more akin to this:
Fortunately for anyone who has a hard time doing the Bump, there are keyboard shortcuts to perform those same funky-fresh moves.
You just need to use the Windows flag key and the arrow keys :
Windows flag key.

Arrow keys.
Here is a quick breakdown:
·        Windows Flag + Left Arrow: Resize the selected window to the left-half of the screen.
·        Windows Flag + Right Arrow: Resize the selected window to the right-half of the screen.
·        Windows Flag + Up Arrow: Maximize the selected window.
Those of you with multiple displays will notice that you can only bump one side of your screen. DO NOT FRET! You can use the keyboard method to resize windows even if you can’t bump.
That’s all there is to it! Enjoy your newfound multi-tasking abilities!

Have a great month, everyone!
