Iredale IT Tips: The “Best of” IT Tips Special!
Since the inception of our IT Tips blog in October 2010, I have covered a wide array of topics. From easy little shortcuts, to critical information for avoiding malware infection, there is a slew of information residing in this blog.
As 2012 comes to a close, I thought it would be prudent to take a step back and revisit some valuable, and potentially forgotten tips. There is also a surprise at the bottom of this post for those who get that far.
If the world still exists when we crawl out of our custom school bus bunkers, this blog post will act as an easily accessible compilation of the top-voted IT Tips of the first couple years.

What do you mean top-voted?
It would have been a little vain to choose the top five tips myself… (Though, I would have made some excellent choices). Instead, I sought the aid of our lovely IT Team.

I created a list of all IT Tip topics to date and asked everyone in IT to choose their own top 5. I tallied the results and without further ado (as much as I’d like to do more ado), I present to you the top 5 IT Tips!

Top Tip 1: Practice Safe Computing
Excellent, the IT team chose one of my favorite tips.

There comes a time in every young man and woman’s life to discuss protection. Going around the internet unprotected and unaware is far too dangerous. Always practice safe computing.

Top Tip 2: Backup Your Data
Do you know what’s better than panicking? Not panicking.
Clealy, Princess Leia has lost her data.

A twist of fate is all it takes for your hard drive to sputter, cough and breathe its last breath. A failed hard drive will often lead to complete data loss. Data loss leaves you with one of two options: panic or tranquilly restore your backed-up data. I recommend the latter.
Taking a few minutes to back up your data could really save you in the unfortunate event of a hard drive failure.

Top Tip 3: Spam/Phishing Email
It’s no surprise that our top three tips all pertain to your digital protection. Coming in at number three is the tip covering spam and phishing email.

Were it not for the first two tips having more votes, this one would likely have been number one for me. Spam is one of the most common and effective ways to transmit virus infections.
Phishing email can be even worse than spam. These are tricks expertly crafted by seedy folks looking to get their grimy fingers in your wallet. This tip truly has substance both inside and outside of the workplace. Knowing how to identify spam and phishing email can save your… hind quarters.

Top Tip 4: The Cisco Phone Directory & Keeping your Laptop Cool

Yes, the idea came from this guy.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Cisco phone directory tip was received. This tip generated some of the most positive feedback I have had so it’s no surprise it made the top 5. Let it be known: this tip idea came from the dependable brain of our own Christopher Tatro!

Top Tip 5: Check Availability of Meeting Attendees & Windows 7 Explorer Favorites
This one is Abby’s baby; you can guess why it made the top 5… (hint: she made me do it) Just kidding!!

This tip is actually a great time saver for those of you who are perpetually scheduling meetings. I know there are plenty of you in that situation.

By the Way: The World Won’t End on December 22nd
In regards to the December 21st doomsday prophecy talk: I wholeheartedly jest. For those concerned with all the hoopla surrounding 2012, here are some fun and reassuring links:

Personalize funny videos and birthday eCards at JibJab!

As you can see, the video includes only the handsome gentlemen in IT. Unfortunately, these videos are limited to 5 persons, and as much as Abby and Karen wanted their faces on disco dancers, they opted to let us guys look foolish on our own.
Disco dancers or not, we all wish everyone a happy, fulfilling and safe holiday season. See you in 2013!
Please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email if you have a something that you think will make a good tip. You’ll get credit on the blog for your contribution and I might give you a high-five!
